Collection: Autumn Sowing Flower Seeds
Autumn sowing is one of the most natural and rewarding ways to grow flowers. Many hardy annuals and perennials benefit from spending winter outdoors, where natural cold and moisture help break seed dormancy. As temperatures rise in spring, seedlings emerge at the perfect time, producing stronger plants and often flowering weeks earlier than spring-sown crops.
For European hardiness zones Z4–Z5, autumn sowing is usually carried out from late September until November, depending on local weather conditions. Seeds should be sown after temperatures have cooled but before the ground freezes, allowing them to remain dormant throughout winter.
Recommended autumn sowing methods
- Direct sowing into prepared garden beds after the first frosts.
- Raised beds with well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging during winter.
- Outdoor pots or seed trays, left exposed to natural winter conditions with good drainage.
- Cold frames or unheated greenhouses, providing protection from excessive rain while allowing seeds to experience natural cold.
Whether you're creating a cottage garden, growing flowers for cutting or establishing pollinator-friendly borders, autumn sowing is an excellent way to get a head start on the growing season. Browse our Autumn Sowing collection and discover flower varieties perfectly suited to European Z4–Z5 gardens.
