Planting Instructions
Step 1 – Soak the Corms
Before planting, soak the corms in room-temperature water for 1–2 hours. As they absorb water, they will expand and rehydrate, promoting faster root development and stronger growth.
Pre-sprouting (Highly Recommended)
Pre-sprouting encourages earlier flowering, stronger plants, and higher success rates.
- Fill a shallow tray halfway with lightly moist potting compost.
- Place the soaked corms on the surface with the claws pointing downward.
- Cover lightly with compost.
- Keep the tray in a cool place at 8–12°C.
- Keep the compost slightly moist but never wet.
- After 10–14 days, roots will begin to develop.
Once rooted, transplant carefully into the garden, raised beds or containers.
Outdoor Planting
Plant corms:
- In autumn in regions with mild winters for the earliest spring blooms.
- In late winter or early spring in colder climates once the risk of severe frost has passed.
Plant with the claws pointing downward.
- Depth: 5 cm
- Spacing: 15–20 cm
Ranunculus perform best in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Raised beds and containers provide excellent drainage and help reduce the risk of corm rot.
Growing & Care
Water regularly during dry periods while allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Feed every two weeks during active growth and flowering using a balanced fertiliser formulated for flowering plants.
Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it so the corms can store energy for the following year.
Avoid waterlogged soil, especially after flowering when plants become dormant.
Autumn & Winter Care
Autumn-planted ranunculus generally produce longer stems and earlier flowers than spring-planted corms.
In mild climates (approximately Zone 7 and warmer), corms can overwinter outdoors with protection such as horticultural fleece or low tunnels.
In colder climates, grow under protection or plant in late winter or early spring.
After flowering, once the foliage has completely died back, lift the corms if winter temperatures regularly fall below their tolerance. Allow them to dry thoroughly before storing them in a cool, dark, frost-free place in dry peat, vermiculite or sawdust until the next planting season.
Harvest & Vase Life
Harvest stems at the famous "marshmallow stage", when the flower buds feel soft to the touch but have only just begun to open.
Flowers harvested at this stage will typically last 7–12 days in the vase.
Regular harvesting encourages the plants to continue producing additional flowering stems throughout the season.
