Melinis minutiflora Silver Queen | Mountain Pink Top Seeds

Melinis minutiflora Silver Queen is an elegant ornamental grass with a light, airy habit and delicate, silky flower panicles that develop beautiful silvery-pink tones. The fine stems and soft, feathery inflorescences move gracefully in the breeze, bringing texture, movement and a natural, almost ethereal quality to summer borders, naturalistic plantings, containers and dried flower arrangements.

Silver Queen grows to approximately 60 cm tall and flowers from July through October. It performs particularly well in warm, sunny positions and is heat and drought tolerant once established. Although botanically perennial, it is not frost hardy and is therefore generally grown as an annual in colder European climates.

Silvery-Pink, Silky Flower Panicles

Silver Queen is grown primarily for its exceptionally delicate silvery, silky inflorescences with soft pink tones.

The fine panicles rise above the foliage and create a light, floating appearance. Their feathery texture catches both light and movement, giving the plant a very different character from heavier ornamental grasses.

Rather than creating a dense architectural mass, Silver Queen provides a soft veil of colour and texture, making it particularly effective when planted among flowering perennials and annuals.

An Ornamental Grass Full of Movement

With its fine stems and airy flower heads, Silver Queen introduces movement into garden plantings.

The approximately 60 cm tall plants are compact enough to integrate easily into mixed borders while still providing sufficient height to create a visible layer of ornamental grass above lower-growing plants.

It works particularly well in naturalistic gardens, prairie-inspired plantings, dry gardens and informal summer borders.

Silver Queen can also be grown in containers, making it an attractive ornamental grass for sunny patios and balconies.

Flowering from Summer into Autumn

Silver Queen flowers primarily from July through October, depending on sowing time, climate and growing conditions.

The airy inflorescences provide ornamental interest during late summer, when many garden plantings benefit from additional texture and movement.

As the season progresses, the soft flower heads continue to complement late-summer and autumn flowers beautifully.

Sowing Silver Queen

Sow from March onwards under warm, protected conditions for planting outside after the danger of frost has passed.

Sow the seeds onto a fine, evenly moist seed-starting substrate.

Germination temperature: approx. 15°C
Germination: approx. 7–14 days
Germination conditions: Darkness

The supplier specifies a Top of Paper, 15°C, Dark germination method. After sowing, maintain even moisture while avoiding waterlogging.

Once seedlings have emerged, provide good light and air circulation for healthy development.

Growing the Seedlings

Allow seedlings to develop under protected conditions until outdoor temperatures are suitable.

Young plants can be transplanted into larger cells or small pots as necessary.

Before planting outdoors, gradually acclimatise the plants to outside conditions.

As Silver Queen is not frost hardy, plant outdoors only after the risk of frost has passed.

Growing Conditions

Silver Queen performs best in full sun and well-drained soil.

It adapts to various soil types, particularly sandy to loamy soils, and can grow across a relatively broad range from acidic to calcareous conditions.

Once established, the plants show good heat and drought tolerance, making them particularly useful for sunny and relatively dry garden situations.

Good drainage is essential. Silver Queen does not tolerate waterlogged soil, and saline soils should also be avoided.

Grown as an Annual in Colder Climates

Melinis minutiflora is botanically a perennial grass, but Silver Queen is not frost hardy.

In climates with cold winters, it is therefore generally cultivated as an annual ornamental grass: sown in spring, flowering during summer and autumn, and completing its garden display before winter.

This makes it easy to incorporate into seasonal planting schemes alongside annual flowers.

Silver Queen as a Dried Flower

The delicate inflorescences can also be used for dried flower arrangements.

Harvest stems when the flower panicles are well developed and have achieved their characteristic silvery-pink appearance.

For drying, gather the stems in small bunches and hang them upside down in a dry, dark and well-ventilated location.

The fine texture of the panicles makes Silver Queen especially useful for adding softness and movement to dried arrangements and natural-style decorations.

For Naturalistic Gardens and Containers

Silver Queen is particularly attractive when planted among flowers rather than isolated on its own.

Its translucent, airy appearance allows surrounding plants to remain visible through the grass, creating a layered and natural effect.

Use it in naturalistic borders, dry gardens, prairie-style planting, mixed annual beds, large containers or seasonal landscape plantings.

The silvery-pink panicles combine beautifully with soft pink, apricot, burgundy, purple, cream and white flowers.

Melinis minutiflora Silver Queen is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for an airy ornamental grass grown from seed. Its delicate silvery-pink inflorescences, graceful movement and tolerance of warm, dry conditions make it especially valuable for naturalistic gardens, summer borders, containers and dried flower arrangements.
