Kniphofia uvaria Flamenco | Red Hot Poker Seeds

Kniphofia uvaria 'Flamenco', commonly known as Red Hot Poker, is a spectacular perennial producing magnificent upright flower spikes in a vibrant mixture of yellow, orange and fiery red shades. A FastraX perennial, Flamenco can flower from seed in its first year without requiring vernalization, making it an exceptional choice for perennial borders, bold landscape plantings and cut-flower gardens.

The dramatic flower spikes rise above clumps of long, narrow foliage, creating strong vertical structure in the garden. Their warm gradient of yellow, orange and red gives Flamenco its characteristic flame-like appearance.

Growing to approximately 80 cm tall, Kniphofia Flamenco works beautifully as a statement perennial planted individually or, for greater impact, in groups through sunny borders.

The strong, distinctive flower stems are also excellent for cutting and flower arrangements, adding height, colour and architectural form to seasonal bouquets.

First-Year Flowering Perennial

Kniphofia Flamenco belongs to the FastraX perennial group and is capable of flowering in its first year from seed without vernalization.

For first-year flowering, an early sowing is recommended because the spring crop time is approximately 26–28 weeks.

Although a chilling period is not required for flower initiation, cooler conditions can contribute to more uniform and abundant flowering.

Sowing

When to Sow

For flowering from July onwards, sow from January to May.

Seeds can also be sown from June to August for plants intended to flower the following year.

For gardeners wanting flowers in the first season, sowing early in the year provides the longest possible growing period.

How to Sow

Sow 2–3 seeds per plug.

Alternatively, the seeds can be sown directly into their final pots, using approximately 4–6 seeds per pot.

Important – Light is Required for Germination

Kniphofia Flamenco seeds require light for germination.

Sow onto the surface of a moist, well-drained seed-starting substrate. Press the seeds gently into the surface to ensure good contact with the growing medium.

Do not bury the seeds deeply.

Germination

Germination normally takes approximately 14–20 days under suitable conditions.

  • Germination temperature: 18–22°C
  • Germination time: Approx. 14–20 days
  • Light: Required for germination
  • Sowing: 2–3 seeds per plug
  • Recommended substrate pH: 5.5–6.2

During the early seedling stage, maintain approximately 18–20°C.

As the young plants develop, temperatures can gradually be reduced to approximately 14–16°C to encourage sturdy, compact growth.

Growing On

The young plants can normally be transplanted approximately 8 weeks after sowing.

Grow at around 15°C in a well-drained, humus-rich growing medium.

Kniphofia develops best in bright conditions and should receive plenty of light during the growing period.

Avoid keeping the substrate permanently saturated, as good drainage is particularly important for healthy root development.

Planting in the Garden

Choose a warm, sunny and well-drained position.

Kniphofia performs best in humus-rich, sandy or loamy soil that drains freely and warms relatively quickly in spring.

Heavy soils that remain wet for long periods should be improved before planting.

Good winter drainage is particularly important in colder climates.

Winter Care

Kniphofia Flamenco is a perennial suitable for approximately USDA hardiness zones 5–9, but winter performance depends considerably on drainage and local conditions.

In colder climates, protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch or straw during winter. Young plants can benefit from additional protection with horticultural fleece.

Container-grown plants are more exposed to freezing temperatures than plants growing in the ground and may require additional winter protection.

Avoid excessive winter moisture around the crown.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment and prolonged dry periods, but avoid constantly waterlogged soil.

Established Kniphofia plants develop good tolerance to warm and relatively dry conditions.

Deep, less frequent watering is generally preferable to keeping the surface continuously wet.

Feeding

Kniphofia is a relatively nutrient-demanding perennial.

During active growth, provide regular balanced feeding to support vigorous foliage and strong flower stems.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage overly soft vegetative growth.

A potassium-balanced fertilizer during spring can help support strong flowering.

Excellent Cut Flower

The dramatic flower spikes of Kniphofia Flamenco are particularly valuable for floral design.

Their strong vertical form adds height and structure to arrangements, while the unusual progression of yellow, orange and red tones creates a striking focal point.

Flamenco combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and other warm-toned summer flowers.

Garden Design

Kniphofia is particularly effective when planted in groups, where the upright flower spikes create a dramatic rhythm through a perennial border.

Its architectural form works especially well with:

  • Ornamental grasses
  • Echinacea
  • Achillea
  • Salvia
  • Verbena
  • Rudbeckia
  • Other sun-loving perennials

The combination of narrow foliage and tall flower spikes makes it especially useful for prairie-style, naturalistic and contemporary garden designs.

Ideal For

  • Sunny perennial borders
  • Cut-flower gardens
  • Flower arrangements
  • Naturalistic planting
  • Prairie-style gardens
  • Cottage gardens
  • Contemporary planting schemes
  • Landscape planting
  • Mass planting
  • Warm, well-drained garden positions

Kniphofia uvaria Flamenco | Red Hot Poker is an outstanding perennial for gardeners looking for dramatic colour and strong architectural form. Its magnificent yellow, orange and red flower spikes, first-year flowering potential and suitability for both the garden and cutting make Flamenco an impressive addition to a sunny perennial collection.
