Gomphocardus fruticosus Cottonbush | Milkweed

Gomphocarpus fruticosus, commonly known as Cottonbush or Milkweed, is a fast-growing, short-lived shrub that adds a unique, exotic touch to your garden. This soft, bushy plant thrives in well-drained soil and sunny positions. With its distinctive pointed, inflated seed pods, which start pale green and turn brown, it’s an eye-catching addition to any landscape. The dried pods make a stunning feature in floral arrangements, both fresh and dried.

Germination Method:

  • Sow seeds on the surface of damp paper or well-drained soil.
  • Ideal temperature: 20-30°C.
  • Light required for germination.
  • Germination time: 7-14 days.

Growing Instructions:

  • Grow in well-drained soil and place in a sunny spot for best results.
  • Regular feeding with compost and consistent watering will promote a more bushy, vigorous plant.
  • Propagate easily from seed, sowing in spring or summer.
  • To harvest seeds, allow the pods to ripen on the plant, then carefully collect when they begin to split. Be sure to monitor closely or bag the pods, as the seeds will disperse when the pod opens.

Flowering & Harvest:

  • Blooms in June through September, offering long-lasting, attractive flowers.
  • Harvest seed as the pods split open.

Height:

  • Grows up to 90 cm (35 inches) tall.

Care Tips:

  • Cottonbush is a low-maintenance plant but be cautious when handling the cut stems and pods. Wash your hands after cutting and dispose of all clippings properly to avoid skin irritation.
  • Dried seed pods last well in a vase, making them a great addition to floral displays.

Perfect for:
Creating a stunning visual focal point in your garden with its unique seed pods and beautiful flowers, as well as for adding a natural touch to fresh and dried flower arrangements.
