Achillea ptarmica Marshmallow | Sneezewort | Pelleted

A charming compact perennial producing masses of fully double, snowy-white flowers with a soft, romantic appearance. Achillea ptarmica 'Marshmallow' flowers in its first year from seed without vernalization and is an excellent choice for pots, borders and perennial gardens.

Achillea ptarmica 'Marshmallow', commonly known as Sneezewort, is a beautiful compact perennial selected for its abundant double white flowers, uniform habit and relatively fast production from seed.

Unlike the flat flower heads associated with many traditional Achillea varieties, Marshmallow produces masses of small, fully double, button-like white blooms. Their delicate appearance makes this variety particularly attractive for romantic, cottage-style and naturalistic garden designs.

As a FastraX perennial, Marshmallow is capable of flowering in the first year without requiring vernalization. Sow from February to April for flowering from approximately May through July under suitable growing conditions.

The compact plants reach approximately 30 cm in height, making Marshmallow particularly useful for the front of perennial borders, pots and mixed container plantings.

Sowing

When to Sow

For flowering in the first year:

Sow February–April for flowering approximately May–July, depending on sowing date, temperature and growing conditions.

Seeds can also be sown in September for flowering the following year.

How to Sow

Sow 2–3 pelleted seeds per plug onto the surface of a fine, well-drained seed-starting medium.

Important – Light Required for Germination

Do not cover the seeds with soil or vermiculite.

Achillea ptarmica Marshmallow requires light for germination, so the pellets should remain exposed on the surface of the growing medium.

Gently press them onto the moist substrate to ensure good contact.

Germination

  • Germination time: Approx. 10–15 days
  • Germination temperature: 18–21°C
  • Light: Required
  • Recommended substrate pH: 5.8–6.5
  • Substrate: Low soluble salt levels and good drainage

Once germination has occurred, grow the young plugs at approximately 15–18°C.

Maintain even moisture during germination without saturating the growing medium.

Growing On

After the young plants are established, grow at approximately 13–15°C.

For spring forcing and faster development towards flowering, temperatures can be increased to around 15–18°C.

Provide plenty of light and good air circulation to encourage strong, compact plants.

Soil & Growing Medium

Use a loose, well-drained, coarse-fibred substrate with a recommended pH of approximately 5.8–6.5.

Achillea performs best when excess water can drain freely. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler periods.

Marshmallow has relatively high nutrient requirements during active growth, so regular balanced feeding will support strong plants and abundant flowering.

First-Year Flowering

One of the most valuable characteristics of Achillea ptarmica 'Marshmallow' is its ability to flower in its first growing season.

As a FastraX perennial, it does not require a cold vernalization period before its first flowering.

Under suitable spring production conditions, crop time is approximately 12–14 weeks (84–98 days).

This makes Marshmallow an excellent perennial for gardeners who want flowers relatively quickly from seed.

Growing Outdoors

Marshmallow is well suited to outdoor production and can be grown without consistently warm greenhouse conditions.

Established plants prefer full sun and a well-drained position.

With a hardiness range of approximately zones 3–9, Achillea ptarmica is a hardy perennial suitable for a wide range of temperate climates.

BeGreen Pelleted Seeds

Marshmallow is supplied as BeGreen pelleted seed.

Pelleting makes the naturally small seeds significantly easier to handle and allows more accurate sowing into individual plug cells.

The BeGreen coating is designed without chemical binders or microplastics, providing a more environmentally conscious pelleting solution.
