Large Deep Blue Bell-Shaped Flowers
Campana Deep Blue produces beautiful large bell-shaped flowers in a rich deep blue-violet colour.
The flowers are approximately 4.5–5 cm across and are arranged along tall upright stems, creating an elegant vertical shape.
This makes Campana especially useful in bouquets. While round flowers create fullness, Campanula adds height and structure, helping to give an arrangement a more natural and interesting shape.
Deep Blue combines beautifully with white, cream, blush pink, lavender, soft yellow, peach and green flowers.
Excellent Cut Flower
Campana F1 was bred especially for cut flower production.
The plants produce strong stems with good foliage and flowers concentrated toward the upper part of the stem. The series is also known for its uniform growth and flowering, which is especially useful when several Campana colours are grown together.
The long stems make Campana Deep Blue beautiful for:
- garden-style bouquets;
- wedding flowers;
- large seasonal bouquets;
- florist arrangements;
- flower farm production.
Sowing & Germination
Campana Deep Blue F1 is supplied as pelleted seed, making the small seeds much easier to sow.
Sow 1 seed per cell onto the surface of moist seed-starting compost.
Do not cover the seeds, as light helps with germination.
- Sowing: Surface sow
- Cover: No
- Germination Temperature: approx. 20–22°C
- Germination: approx. 4–5 days
- Plug Crop Time: approx. 7–8 weeks
Keep the compost evenly moist while the seeds germinate, but avoid keeping it soaking wet.
After germination, cooler conditions of around 16–18°C help the young plants develop well.
How Long From Seed to Flower?
Campana grows relatively quickly compared with many other professional cut flowers.
Allow approximately:
7–8 weeks for growing the young plants
- 10–14 weeks from transplanting to flowering.
This gives a total growing time of approximately 17–22 weeks, or 119–154 days from seed to flower.
The exact flowering time will depend on temperature, light and daylength.
Important – Daylength
Daylength is important when growing Campana.
The plants first need enough time to develop good leaves and long, strong stems. After this, longer days encourage flowering.
For professional production, Campana is usually grown under shorter days during the early stages, followed by days longer than 14 hours to encourage flower formation.
For home and small-scale growers, the most important thing to remember is:
Do not encourage Campana to flower too early. Give young plants time to establish and grow strong before they experience very long days.
This is why Campana is particularly well suited to greenhouse and tunnel production, where growing conditions can be controlled more easily.
Growing
Plant Campana in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position.
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially while plants are developing their long stems.
Avoid allowing plants to dry out repeatedly, as dry conditions can encourage earlier flowering and shorter stems.
At the same time, do not overwater. Constantly wet soil can weaken the roots and stems.
For professional cut flower production, plants can be spaced approximately 10–13 cm apart, or around 64–80 plants/m².
Feeding
Campana needs regular nutrition to produce its best long stems.
Use a balanced flower or general-purpose fertiliser containing micronutrients during active growth.
Regular feeding and even moisture are more important than using a very strong fertiliser. Plants that do not receive enough water or nutrients may flower on shorter stems.
Support
Because Campana produces tall stems, support netting is recommended, especially when growing many plants together for cut flowers.
Support helps keep the stems straight and prevents them from falling over as the flowers develop.
Harvesting
Cut Campana Deep Blue when 2–3 flowers on the stem are fully open.
Place the freshly cut stems into clean, cool water as soon as possible.
With good care and flower preservative, Campana can have a vase life of up to approximately 10 days.
Keep cut stems away from ripening fruit, as Campanula is sensitive to ethylene.
