There are some species like poppies and nigella that just do best when direct sown - or aren’t worth planting into plugs that need to be hardened off and planted out.
Some - such as the foxgloves - have such tiny seed that it is difficult to handle when direct sowing. Poppy seed on the other hand usually comes in large enough volumes that direct sowing makes the most sense.
