Rich Purple Flowers for Seasonal Floristry

The beautiful rich purple flowers of Benary's Giant Purple bring depth, intensity and a sophisticated colour accent to bouquets and floral arrangements.

Purple is exceptionally versatile in seasonal floristry and works beautifully in both colourful summer arrangements and deeper, richer late-summer and autumn palettes.

Benary's Giant Purple combines beautifully with:

Pink • Blush Pink • Lavender • Lilac • White • Apricot • Burgundy • Green • Soft Neutrals

Its saturated purple flowers can create a striking focal point in colourful bouquets or add depth to romantic, moody and sophisticated floral designs.

It is particularly useful for summer and autumn floristry, where its rich colour pairs beautifully with both soft pastel shades and stronger seasonal tones.

Premium Cut Flower Zinnia

The Benary's Giant Series is highly valued for professional cut flower production. Benary's Giant Purple combines impressive flower size with long, strong stems and excellent productivity.

Plants produce long, sturdy stems topped with large, densely double flowers, making them particularly suitable for bouquets and professional floral arrangements.

Regular harvesting encourages branching and the development of new flowering stems, helping to provide high-quality cut flowers throughout the season.

Sowing

Indoor Sowing

Sow indoors approximately 4 weeks before the last expected spring frost.

Sow 1 seed per cell and cover lightly with vermiculite or a fine growing medium.

Maintain a temperature of approximately 21–24°C. Under suitable conditions, germination usually occurs within 3–5 days.

Zinnias grow quickly, so avoid allowing seedlings to become root-bound in small cells. Transplant carefully and minimise unnecessary disturbance to the roots.

Direct Sowing

Benary's Giant Purple can also be direct sown outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Sow approximately 5–6 mm deep.

For a continuous supply of premium-quality cut flowers throughout summer, make successive sowings every 2–3 weeks.

Growing & Care

Grow Benary's Giant Purple in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

Zinnias love warmth and grow rapidly once summer temperatures arrive. They are very sensitive to frost, so transplant outdoors only when all danger of frost has passed.

Water deeply at the base of the plants and provide good air circulation. Avoid regularly wetting the foliage.

Pinching young plants encourages branching and increases the number of strong stems suitable for cutting.

Regular harvesting and deadheading also stimulate the production of new flowering shoots throughout the season.

Harvesting for Cut Flowers

Harvest flowers when they are almost fully open and the stem has become firm.

To check whether a flower is ready to harvest, use the well-known “wiggle test.” Hold the stem approximately 20 cm below the bloom and gently shake it.

If the stem remains stiff and the flower head does not move excessively, the bloom is ready to cut.

If the stem bends and the flower head wobbles noticeably, allow it to mature a little longer before harvesting.

Cut deeply into the plant to encourage the development of strong new flowering stems.

Vase life: approximately 7–10 days.

Remove any foliage that would sit below the water line and place freshly cut stems into clean water as soon as possible.

Zinnias are sensitive to very cold storage temperatures and should not be stored in excessively cold conditions.

Long Summer Flowering

Once flowering begins, Benary's Giant Purple can continue producing new blooms throughout summer and into early autumn.

Regular harvesting and removing spent flowers prevents plants from directing their energy into seed production and encourages the continuous development of new flowering stems.

For the longest possible harvest:

  • Harvest flowers regularly
  • Remove faded or damaged blooms
  • Water deeply during dry periods
  • Maintain good air circulation
  • Make successive sowings every 2–3 weeks

With good care, plants can continue flowering until the first autumn frost.
