Tagetes patula Strawberry Blonde | French Marigold | Colour-Changing Blooms

Strawberry Blonde is an extraordinary French Marigold with flowers that change colour as they mature. Instead of producing blooms in just one shade, the plant displays a beautiful mixture of rose, warm orange, peachy and soft straw tones at the same time, creating a constantly changing multicolour effect.

Strawberry Blonde belongs to the breeder’s “New World marigolds” and introduces genetics that create multicoloured blooms on a single plant – a completely different look from traditional French Marigolds.

One of the most fascinating features of Strawberry Blonde is that the colour of the flowers changes as they age. Mature blooms progress from rose through orange to a soft straw colour, so one compact plant can carry several different shades simultaneously.

Why is Strawberry Blonde so special?

The colour display also changes with the weather. During cooler early-spring conditions, the flowers change colour more slowly, creating stronger contrast between the different shades. In warmer conditions, the colour transition happens faster and the contrast becomes softer.

This means Strawberry Blonde can look slightly different throughout the season – part of the charm of this unusual variety.

Its compact, rounded habit makes it particularly attractive for pots, balcony containers, decorative planters, borders and flower beds.

Growing from Seed

Sow one seed per cell in a fine, well-drained seed-starting medium.

Cover the seeds after sowing. Maintain a temperature of approximately 21–22°C during the first stage of germination. Light is optional during germination.

Under professional conditions, germination progresses quickly, with the breeder listing approximately 2–3 days from 50% to maximum germination.

After germination, maintain approximately 20–24°C while the seedlings develop. Avoid keeping the substrate excessively wet, but do not allow young seedlings to dry out completely. The professional plug crop takes approximately 3 weeks.

Once the plants are established and outdoor conditions are suitable, gradually harden them off before planting outside.

Growing & Care

Choose a warm, sunny position. Strawberry Blonde develops a naturally compact, rounded plant approximately 20–25 cm tall and wide, making it especially suitable where a neat, low-growing marigold is required.

Space plants approximately 15–25 cm apart.

The compact habit makes Strawberry Blonde particularly suitable for balcony pots and decorative containers. Several plants can also be combined in larger containers to create a fuller display with many flowers at different stages of their colour transformation.

The breeder specifically notes that containers with several open flowers show the greatest colour contrast as the blooms mature from rose to orange and finally to straw tones.

From Transplant to Flowering

Strawberry Blonde is a relatively fast crop.

Plug crop: approximately 3 weeks
Premium packs: approximately 3–4 weeks after transplanting
Larger pots or multi-plant containers: approximately 4–6 weeks after transplanting

Actual development time can vary depending on temperature, season, location and growing conditions.

Perfect for Pots & Balconies

Strawberry Blonde is especially interesting for your balcony and pot seed collection because it combines a compact size with an unusual flower colour that continually evolves throughout the season.

The rose, warm orange and soft straw shades can appear together on the same plant, creating a sophisticated colour palette that is very different from the classic bright yellow and orange appearance associated with traditional marigolds.

Tagetes patula Strawberry Blonde is a truly distinctive French Marigold – compact, easy to use in containers and remarkable for its colour-changing blooms.
