Plant Information

- Variety: Evolution® White
- Common name: Mealy Sage
- Family: Lamiaceae
- Plant type: Tender perennial, commonly grown as an annual in cooler climates
- Flower colour: White
- Height: Approx. 53 cm
- Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
- Crop time: Approx. 12–20 weeks
- Seed form: Raw seed
- Use: Flower beds, borders, landscaping, pots, containers and cut flowers
In regions with cold winters, Salvia farinacea is generally grown as an annual summer-flowering plant, as it does not tolerate frost.
Sowing & Germination
For flowering plants from spring onwards, seeds can be sown indoors from December to April. Later sowings in May–June can provide flowering plants from late summer.
- Sow 2–3 seeds per plug or cell
- Direct sowing into the final pot is also possible
- Sow onto a fine, well-drained seed-starting substrate
- Light helps germination, so avoid covering the seeds deeply
- Germination temperature: 22–24°C
- Germination time: Approx. 5–10 days
- Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged
- High humidity during germination helps achieve uniform emergence
Once seedlings have emerged, gradually increase ventilation and avoid keeping the substrate constantly saturated.
Transplanting & Growing On
Transplant established seedlings into pots, larger containers or garden beds using a light, fertile and well-drained growing medium.
Avoid strong fertilisation immediately after transplanting. Allow the plants to develop a healthy root system before gradually increasing feeding.
For compact, sturdy growth, a finishing temperature of approximately 15–18°C is suitable.
Soil & Growing Medium
Evolution® White performs best in fertile but well-drained soil.
For container cultivation, use a quality substrate with good drainage and a recommended pH of approximately 5.5–6.5.
In the garden, choose humus-rich or loamy soil that does not remain waterlogged after rain.
Good drainage is particularly important for maintaining a healthy root system.
Light & Temperature
Grow in full sun or partial shade. Plants generally flower most abundantly when they receive plenty of light.
A growing temperature of approximately 14–16°C is suitable after the young plants are established.
Salvia farinacea is sensitive to frost. Do not plant outdoors until the risk of spring frost has passed.
Watering
Water regularly during active growth, particularly when plants are grown in pots and containers.
Allow the upper layer of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots permanently wet, as prolonged waterlogging can damage the root system.
Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during hot summer weather.
Feeding
Evolution® White is a relatively vigorous and floriferous plant and benefits from regular feeding during active growth.
Use a complete, balanced fertiliser at moderate concentrations. Several lighter applications are preferable to occasional very strong feeding because the roots can be sensitive to excessive salt levels.
Avoid overfertilising young plants before they have properly rooted into their containers.
Flowering & Garden Performance
Under suitable conditions, Evolution® White develops numerous upright flower spikes and continues producing new flowers over a long period.
Removing faded flower spikes can help maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued flowering.
Its clean white colour makes it particularly useful for creating contrast and adding lightness to mixed plantings.
Evolution® White combines beautifully with flowers in shades of:
- Blue and lavender
- Soft pink
- Apricot and peach
- Burgundy
- Purple
- Silver and green
- Pastel colour combinations
Growing in Pots & Containers
The compact but vigorous growth of Evolution® White makes it an excellent container plant.
It can be grown alone in a pot or combined with trailing and compact flowering plants in mixed containers.
Choose a container with drainage holes and use a good-quality, well-drained potting substrate. Regular watering and feeding will support continuous flowering throughout the summer.
Growing for Cut Flowers
The upright white flower spikes can also be harvested for fresh bouquets and floral arrangements.
Cut stems when several flowers on the spike have opened but the upper buds are still developing. Harvest preferably during the cooler part of the day and place the stems immediately into clean water.
The white flower spikes add beautiful vertical movement and texture to natural garden-style bouquets.
Uses
Salvia farinacea Evolution® White is particularly suitable for:
- Summer flower beds
- Mixed borders
- Mass plantings
- Pots and patio containers
- Large mixed containers
- Landscape plantings
- Cottage-style gardens
- Fresh-cut flower production
Salvia farinacea Evolution® White is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a vigorous, long-flowering white salvia with an elegant upright habit. Easy to combine with other summer flowers, it performs beautifully in borders, containers and cut-flower gardens from summer until frost.
