How Long Does It Take to Flower?

Under favourable conditions, the first flowers can appear approximately 90 days after planting pre-sprouted corms.

In cooler conditions or periods with limited natural light, flowering may take approximately 100–120 days.

Ranunculus is a cool-season flower and produces its best flowers and longest stems in bright, cool growing conditions.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wake Up Ranunculus Corms

Dry ranunculus corms naturally look small, hard and shrivelled. This is completely normal – they are dormant and need to absorb water before active growth begins.

Step 1 – Soak the Corms

Place the corms in clean, cool or room-temperature water for approximately 3–4 hours.

Do not use hot water and do not soak overnight, as excessive soaking can increase the risk of rot.

During soaking, the corms absorb water and become noticeably plumper.

Step 2 – Pre-Sprout

After soaking, the corms can be planted directly, but pre-sprouting is recommended, particularly in Northern European climates.

Fill a tray with a light growing medium such as potting mix with perlite, coco coir or vermiculite.

The substrate should be slightly moist, never wet.

Place the corms with their pointed, claw-like parts facing down and cover with approximately 2–3 cm of substrate.

Step 3 – Keep Cool

Keep the tray for approximately 10–14 days at 4–10°C in a cool, frost-free location.

Check every few days. The substrate should remain only slightly moist.

When small white roots and short shoots appear, the corms are ready for planting.

Plant pre-sprouted corms with the pointed claws facing downwards.

Water lightly after planting.

Ranunculus dislikes cold, waterlogged soil. If your garden soil is heavy or remains wet, raised beds or containers are a better choice.

Watering

Until active leaves appear, water very carefully. Newly planted corms use little moisture and can rot in excessively wet soil.

Once active growth begins, keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.

As the plants become larger and start producing flower stems, their water requirements increase. Consistent moisture helps produce longer stems and larger flowers.

Fertilising

Ranunculus benefits from fertile soil but does not require excessive feeding.

Before planting, enrich the soil with well-decomposed compost and a moderate amount of balanced fertiliser.

Once plants have established several healthy leaves, usually around 3–4 weeks after planting, begin feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser at a low or moderate strength.

When flower buds appear, switch to a flowering fertiliser with moderate nitrogen and slightly higher potassium.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lush foliage at the expense of flowers and strong stems.

Growing in Containers

Elegance® BIANCO 224B B&B can also be grown successfully in large containers with drainage holes.

Use a fertile, free-draining potting mix and leave approximately 15 cm between corms.

Keep containers in a bright, cool location and never allow them to stand in water.

Growing in Colder Climates

In colder regions, ranunculus can be successfully grown in:

Unheated greenhouses • Polytunnels • Raised beds with frost protection • Large containers • Protected garden beds

Young plants tolerate cool temperatures, but severe or prolonged frost can damage them. Protect plants with horticultural fleece when necessary.

Bright, cool conditions generally produce stronger plants, longer stems and better-quality flowers.

Harvesting for Cut Flowers

For the best vase life, harvest when the flower is fully coloured and beginning to open but not yet completely expanded.

A useful way to check is to gently squeeze the bud:

• Very firm bud: Too early
• Soft, marshmallow-like bud: Ideal for harvesting
• Fully open flower: Best for immediate use

Cut during the cooler morning hours and place the stems immediately into clean water.

Remove leaves that would remain below the waterline and keep cut flowers away from direct sunlight, heat and ripening fruit.

Regular harvesting encourages continued flower production.
