How to Plant Ranunculus Corms

Step 1 – Soak the Corms

Before planting, soak the dormant corms in room-temperature water for approximately 1–2 hours.

During soaking, the dry corms will gradually absorb water and become plumper, helping encourage faster root development and stronger growth.

Avoid soaking for excessively long periods, as overly wet corms may become susceptible to rot.

Step 2 – Pre-Sprouting – Highly Recommended

Pre-sprouting encourages stronger establishment, more uniform growth and earlier flowering.

Fill a shallow tray with lightly moist potting compost.

Place the soaked corms into the compost with their characteristic claws pointing downward.

Cover lightly with compost and keep in a cool location at approximately 8–12°C.

Keep the compost slightly moist but never wet.

Roots and new growth should begin developing within approximately 10–14 days.

Once a healthy root system has developed, carefully transplant the corms into their final growing position.

Outdoor Planting

Plant the corms with the claws pointing downward.

Planting depth: Approx. 5 cm
Spacing: 15–20 cm

Ranunculus perform best in fertile, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Good drainage is essential, as corms are sensitive to prolonged waterlogging.

Raised beds are particularly suitable for Ranunculus and can help provide the excellent drainage they require.

In regions with mild winters, corms can be planted in autumn for earlier spring flowers.

In colder climates, plant under protection or in late winter to early spring according to local conditions.

Growing & Care

Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, but avoid overwatering.

Feed regularly during active growth and flowering with a balanced fertiliser suitable for flowering plants.

Regular harvesting and removal of faded flowers encourage the plants to continue producing additional flowering stems.

After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it. This allows the corms to store energy before entering dormancy.

Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly once plants begin to become dormant.

Autumn & Winter Care

Autumn-planted Ranunculus generally produce earlier flowers and longer stems than spring-planted corms.

In mild climates, plants may overwinter outdoors with suitable protection such as horticultural fleece or low tunnels.

In colder regions, Ranunculus are best grown under protection or planted in late winter or early spring.

After flowering, once the foliage has completely died back, the corms can be lifted and dried. Store them in a cool, dark, dry and frost-free location until the following planting season.

Harvest & Vase Life

For premium cut-flower quality, harvest Ranunculus at the famous “marshmallow stage” — when the flower buds feel soft and slightly springy when gently squeezed, but the flowers have only just begun to open.

Flowers harvested at the correct stage can typically provide a vase life of approximately 7–12 days under good conditions.

For best results, harvest during the cooler part of the day and place the stems into clean water immediately after cutting.

Regular harvesting encourages continued production of new flowering stems.
