Muhlenbergia reverchonii Rosy | Ruby Muhly
Muhlenbergia reverchonii ‘Rosy’ is an exceptionally elegant perennial ornamental grass that forms dense clumps of fine green foliage. From late summer, the plant is covered with airy reddish-pink flower plumes that appear to float above the leaves, creating a soft, cloud-like effect.
Compared with larger Ruby Muhly types, Rosy is more compact and has finer, softer flower plumes, making it easy to incorporate into modern, naturalistic and prairie-style gardens.
Once established, it is heat and drought tolerant and performs best in a warm, sunny position. Warm temperatures and plenty of light are important for strong growth and abundant flowering.

Sowing & Germination
Sow 4–6 seeds per plug or small pot. As the seeds are small, press them gently onto the surface of the growing medium. A heavy covering is not recommended.
Keep at approximately 20–22 °C and maintain consistent moisture during germination. The substrate should remain moist but never waterlogged.
Under optimal professional growing conditions, germination can begin within 7–14 days, although Muhlenbergia reverchonii can sometimes germinate more slowly and irregularly. Allow up to 3–4 weeks before assuming that germination has failed.
After germination, reduce the temperature to approximately 18–20 °C.
Growing On
Once established, grow the young plants at approximately 15–20 °C in a well-drained substrate.
Muhlenbergia is a warm-season grass. Higher temperatures encourage faster development, while warm conditions, high light levels and long days help promote abundant flower plume formation.
Plants are sensitive to frost, so young plants should not be planted outside too early in spring.
Light & Location
For the most spectacular flowering, choose a warm, sunny position.
Although Rosy tolerates partial shade, plenty of sunlight encourages stronger plants and more abundant pink flower plumes.
A dry to moderately moist, well-drained soil is ideal. Once established, plants tolerate heat and periods of drought very well.
Watering & Feeding
Keep young plants evenly moist while they establish. Mature plants prefer a moderate wet-to-dry cycle, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Avoid both prolonged waterlogging and severe drought during early growth.
Feed moderately with a balanced fertiliser. Heavy feeding is unnecessary.
Flowering
The real beauty of Rosy appears from late summer into autumn, when delicate reddish-pink flower plumes rise above the foliage.
From a distance, the flowers create the appearance of a soft pink haze floating over the plant, making Muhlenbergia particularly effective when several plants are grown together.
Its natural flowering period is approximately August to October, depending on climate and growing conditions.
Garden Use
Rosy is ideal for creating a light, natural and contemporary look in the garden. Its fine foliage provides structure throughout the season, while the pink flower clouds become a spectacular late-summer feature.
It works beautifully in prairie-style gardens, gravel gardens, perennial borders, naturalistic plantings and modern landscape designs.
For the strongest visual effect, plant several together to create a larger cloud of pink flowers.
Winter Hardiness
Muhlenbergia reverchonii ‘Rosy’ is a perennial ornamental grass, listed for approximately USDA Zones 5–10.
A warm position and excellent soil drainage are particularly important in colder climates. Avoid locations where water remains around the roots during winter.
Perfect for
Sunny borders • Prairie gardens • Gravel gardens • Naturalistic planting • Mass planting • Modern landscapes • Late-summer and autumn gardens
Muhlenbergia reverchonii ‘Rosy’ is an outstanding choice for gardeners looking for a heat- and drought-tolerant perennial ornamental grass with delicate foliage and spectacular clouds of reddish-pink flowers in late summer and autumn.
