Mizuna F1 | Japanese Mustard Greens | Brassica rapa | Seeds

Mizuna F1 is a fast-growing Japanese leafy vegetable with finely cut, bright green leaves and crisp white stems. Its mild, gently peppery flavour makes it a versatile choice for fresh salads, stir-fries, soups and noodle dishes.

This F1 hybrid combines a short growing cycle with a compact habit and highly uniform growth. Suitable for garden beds, raised beds and containers, it can be harvested young for tender salad leaves or allowed to develop larger leaves for cooking.

Fresh Leaves for Salads & Cooking

Young mizuna leaves add a delicate mustard flavour and a feathery texture to mixed salads. Combine them with lettuce and rocket for an attractive blend of shapes and flavours.

Larger leaves and crisp stems are suitable for light cooking. Add them towards the end of cooking to retain their texture in stir-fries, soups and hot pots.

When to Sow

Mizuna is particularly useful for spring and late-summer sowings, when cooler conditions encourage tender leaf growth.

It can also be grown through other seasons with suitable protection and crop management. Year-round production requires conditions appropriate to the local climate; winter growth slows when temperatures and light levels fall.

Sow small batches approximately every two weeks for a regular supply of fresh leaves.

Sowing & Germination

Sowing method: Direct sow into prepared soil or containers
Sowing depth: Approximately 0.5 cm
Spacing for regular small-leaf picking: Approximately 10–15 cm
Spacing for larger plants: Approximately 30–40 cm

Sow into a fine seedbed, cover lightly and water gently. Keep the soil evenly moist while seeds germinate and seedlings establish.

For baby-leaf production, sow more closely and harvest young. Thin plants intended for larger harvests so they have room to develop.

Growing Conditions & Care

Choose fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly to maintain steady growth. Containers should have drainage holes and must not be allowed to dry out.

Hot weather and dry soil can encourage premature flowering. In warmer periods, provide some afternoon shade and harvest leaves promptly.

Protect young plants with fine insect mesh from sowing to help prevent flea beetle damage. Rotate brassica crops between growing areas.

Harvesting

Pick young leaves when they reach your preferred size. Harvest individual outer leaves or cut the foliage above the growing point, leaving the centre intact to support regrowth.

Baby leaves are ready before full-sized plants. Harvest timing varies with temperature, light, season and growing conditions.

For the freshest texture, harvest during the cooler part of the day and refrigerate promptly.
