Matthiola incana Iron Yellow | Stock

Beautiful buttery yellow blooms with exceptional stem strength for premium cut flower production.

Matthiola incana 'Iron Yellow' is a florist-quality variety from the outstanding Iron Series, bred for professional flower growers and cutting gardens. It produces strong, single-stem plants with densely packed spikes of soft buttery yellow flowers that bring warmth and elegance to bouquets and floral arrangements. The closely spaced florets create a full, luxurious appearance while maintaining excellent stem quality from harvest to vase.

The Iron Series is known for its rigid, upright stems, outstanding uniformity, and reliable early to mid-season flowering. Compared with many traditional stock varieties, Iron Yellow develops thicker, stronger stems and compact flower spikes that are ideal for commercial cut flower production and premium floral design.

Its sweet, spicy fragrance has made stock a timeless favorite for spring gardens and floral work. The edible flowers can also be used as beautiful garnishes for salads, desserts, cakes, and cocktails.

Sowing Instructions

Start seeds indoors 5–6 weeks before the last frost in plug trays or cell trays. Sow seeds approximately 6 mm (¼") deep and maintain a temperature of 18–24°C (65–75°F). Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.

Transplant seedlings into fertile, well-drained soil after the danger of frost has passed. Stock thrives in cool growing conditions and performs best in spring and autumn. For continuous harvests, sow every two weeks.

Do not pinch plants, as each plant naturally produces a single flowering stem.

Harvest

Harvest stems when one-third to one-half of the florets on the flower spike have opened for the best vase life, fragrance, and post-harvest quality.
