Eucalyptus stuartiana is an attractive evergreen tree grown for its aromatic, blue-green foliage. Its young leaves have an appealing rounded to heart-shaped form, giving bouquets and floral arrangements beautiful texture, volume and a natural silvery-green accent.

Also known as Apple-scented Gum or Apple Box, this eucalyptus is native to southeastern Australia. It is suitable for commercial cut-foliage production, ornamental planting and cultivation in large containers. Regular harvesting encourages the development of fresh shoots with attractive juvenile foliage.

The name Eucalyptus stuartiana is still used commercially in the seed trade, although it is botanically treated as a synonym of the currently accepted name Eucalyptus ovata. It is a eucalyptus tree—not a palm or tropical houseplant.

In areas with cold winters, it is best grown as an annual foliage crop or in a large container that can be moved to a bright, cool and frost-free location before the first frost.

Sowing and seedling production

Sow the seeds on the surface of moist, fine and well-drained seed compost. Press them gently into the surface and cover with only a very thin layer of fine compost or vermiculite. Avoid planting the seeds too deeply.

Keep the substrate evenly moist but never waterlogged. A propagator lid or clear cover can help maintain humidity during germination, but it should be ventilated regularly. Once seedlings emerge, gradually reduce humidity and provide plenty of light and good air circulation.

Eucalyptus plants dislike root disturbance. Whenever possible, sow directly into deeper plug cells or small pots. Handle young plants carefully during transplanting and keep the root ball intact.

Transplanting and care

Gradually harden off young plants and transplant them outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed. Select a sunny, warm position protected from cold and strong winds.

Water regularly during active growth, allowing the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Good drainage is essential, as eucalyptus does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Pinching the young growing tips encourages branching and produces bushier plants with more florist-quality stems. Regular harvesting promotes the formation of fresh side shoots.
