Didiscus caeruleus Lace Blue | Lace Flower

Didiscus caeruleus, also known as the Blue Lace Flower, is a delicate and stunning annual or semi-perennial with pale lavender-blue flowers that resemble lace. The tiny, star-shaped blooms are arranged in lacy, umbrella-shaped flower heads, giving this plant its unique and attractive appearance. It is a perfect choice for cut flowers due to its sweet fragrance, making it a lovely addition to floral arrangements.

Main Features:

  • Delicate lace-like flowers in pale lavender-blue
  • Sweet-scented and excellent for cut flower arrangements
  • Easy to grow, adaptable to a range of growing conditions
  • Germination takes 14-21 days
  • Mature height: 60-90 cm (24-35 inches)
  • Ideal for sunny gardens or flower beds

Sowing Instructions:

  • Direct Sowing: From April to May, sow seeds 1mm deep in rows spaced 30 cm apart. Ensure soil is rich, well-prepared, and raked to a fine texture. Lightly cover with soil and water. Keep the soil moist. Germination will take 21 days at temperatures above 20°C. Once large enough to handle, thin the seedlings to a spacing of 20-30 cm.
  • Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Use seed trays with seed compost. Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep, lightly cover with soil, and keep moist. Keep the trays in a dark place as darkness aids germination. Ideal temperature for germination is 18-20°C. Germination takes 15-20 days.

After the seedlings have matured, transplant them into small pots and grow on. Acclimatize and plant outside after the danger of frost has passed.

Growing Instructions:

  • Sun: Prefers full sun for best growth
  • Soil: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil
  • Spacing: 20-30 cm between plants
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist until seeds sprout. Once established, water regularly, but ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.
  • Staking: May require light staking to support the tall stems.
  • Cutting: Regularly cut flowers to encourage more blooms and to extend the flowering period. Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant neat.

Additional Notes:

  • Maturity: Flowers take approximately 110 to 120 days to mature and bloom after sowing.
  • Successive Sowing: For a longer blooming season, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks.
