Brassica oleracea Flare™ White F1 | Flowering Kale Seeds

Brassica oleracea Flare™ White F1 is a professional flowering kale bred specifically for cut flower production, combining early maturity, exceptional uniformity and long, straight stems with elegant creamy-white centres. The gently ruffled leaves form sculptural decorative rosettes that resemble large flowers, bringing fresh colour, volume and texture to autumn and early winter arrangements.

Part of the professional Flare™ F1 series, Flare™ White is particularly valued for its ability to produce tall, uniform stems with relative ease. Cool temperatures encourage the development of the characteristic pale centre, while the strong stems and distinctive rosettes make this variety an excellent choice for commercial cut flower production.

An additional advantage of Flare™ White is its suitability for dyeing, allowing growers and florists to create customised colours for special events and floral designs.

Elegant Creamy-White Colour

Flare™ White develops a beautiful creamy-white centre surrounded by fresh green outer foliage, creating a clean and sophisticated colour combination.

The leaves have gently ruffled, wavy edges, adding texture and volume to the rosette and giving it the appearance of a large sculptural flower.

Its neutral colouring makes Flare™ White exceptionally versatile for floristry. It combines beautifully with pastel flowers, green foliage and stronger seasonal colours, making it particularly useful for wedding floristry, autumn bouquets and contemporary floral arrangements.

Excellent for Dyeing

One of the distinctive features of Flare™ White is that it is well suited for dyeing.

The pale central foliage provides an excellent base for adding customised colour, giving professional growers and florists additional creative possibilities.

This makes Flare™ White particularly interesting for event floristry, seasonal colour themes and arrangements requiring unusual or specific shades.

Flare™ F1 – Professional Cut Flower Series

The Flare™ series was developed for professional cut flower production and combines:

Early maturity • Exceptional uniformity • Tall stems • Single-stem growth • Long-lasting cut stems • Gently ruffled foliage • Reliable autumn colour development

Plants reach approximately 60–90 cm in height, producing long stems topped by decorative rosettes.

Unlike compact ornamental kale varieties intended primarily for pots and landscape displays, Flare™ White is bred specifically for cut flower production.

Sowing

Recommended sowing: July–August; June in cooler regions
Germination temperature: 18–20°C
Germination: approximately 4–10 days
Plug tray: 200–288 cells
Plug production: approximately 3–4 weeks

Sow into a fine, evenly moist seed-starting substrate. Maintain consistent moisture during germination, but avoid keeping the growing medium excessively wet.

Supplemental lighting is generally not required during plug production.

Transplant when seedlings have developed approximately 2–3 true leaves.

Growing for Long, Straight Stems

For professional cut flower production, relatively close spacing is important.

Recommended spacing: approximately 15 cm
Support: Horizontal support netting is strongly recommended.

Support netting helps keep the developing stems upright. Without support, tall plants can fall over and produce curved stems, reducing their value as cut flowers.

Avoid excessive spacing between plants. Plants grown too far apart can develop very large rosettes that may be less suitable for commercial cut flower production.

During the initial growth stage, warmer temperatures of approximately 21–29°C encourage stem elongation.

Once plants have reached the desired size, temperatures below approximately 16°C encourage the development of the characteristic creamy-white centre.

Removing Lower Leaves

When plants reach approximately 25 cm in height, begin gradually removing the lower leaves.

Repeat this process approximately 3–4 times as the plants grow taller.

Removing the lower foliage progressively creates the long, clean stems desired for professional floristry.

Avoid removing too much foliage at once while plants are still actively developing.

Fertilisation and Colour Development

During the vegetative growth stage, provide adequate nutrition to encourage strong growth and long stems.

As temperatures decrease and the central rosettes begin developing their characteristic colour, fertilisation should be reduced and eventually stopped.

With a typical July sowing, colour development may begin around late September to October, with harvest generally taking place during October–November, depending on climate and growing conditions.

Harvest

Days to harvest: approximately 90–110 days, depending on climate and growing conditions.

Harvest when the stems have reached the desired length and the central rosettes have developed their characteristic creamy-white colour.

Flare™ White is particularly useful for:

  • Autumn and early winter bouquets
  • Wedding floristry
  • Large floral arrangements
  • Seasonal installations
  • Event floristry
  • Mixed cut flower designs
  • Dyed floral work

Its neutral colouring makes it easy to combine with many different flower palettes.

Growing Notes

Flare™ White is a cool-season finishing crop. Warmer conditions during the initial growth stage encourage long stems, while cooler temperatures later in the season are important for the development of the pale central colour.

Watch for aphids, which can be a significant pest of ornamental Brassica.

Correct spacing, support netting, gradual removal of the lower leaves and cool finishing temperatures are important for producing straight, high-quality stems.
