Golden-Yellow Flowers for Seasonal Floristry
The distinctive golden-yellow colour of Benary's Giant Golden Yellow adds warmth, depth and brightness to bouquets and floral arrangements.
Unlike softer lemon-yellow shades, Golden Yellow has a richer, warmer appearance that works particularly well in summer, late-summer and autumn colour palettes.
For floral design, Golden Yellow combines beautifully with:
Cream • White • Apricot • Peach • Orange • Burgundy • Bronze • Green • Warm Neutrals
It is particularly useful for seasonal bouquets, event floristry, flower farm arrangements and warm autumn-inspired designs.
Premium Cut Flower Zinnia
The Benary's Giant Series is especially valued for professional cut flower production. Golden Yellow combines impressive flower size with the strong stems and productive growth needed for reliable cutting.
Plants produce long, sturdy stems topped with large, densely petalled flowers, making them excellent for bouquets and floral arrangements.
Regular harvesting encourages branching and the production of additional flowering stems, helping provide a continuous supply of premium cut flowers throughout the season.
Sowing
Indoor Sowing
Sow approximately 4 weeks before the last expected spring frost.
Sow 1 seed per cell and cover lightly with vermiculite or fine growing medium.
Maintain a temperature of approximately 21–24°C. Under suitable conditions, germination usually occurs within 3–5 days.
Zinnias grow quickly and should not remain in small cells for too long. Avoid allowing seedlings to become root-bound and transplant carefully to minimise root disturbance.
Direct Sowing
Benary's Giant Golden Yellow can also be direct-sown outdoors once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
Sow approximately 5–6 mm deep.
For a continuous supply of premium cut flowers throughout the summer, make succession sowings every 2–3 weeks.
Growing & Care
Grow Benary's Giant Golden Yellow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Zinnias love warmth and grow rapidly once summer temperatures arrive. They are very sensitive to frost, so plants should only be moved outdoors once all danger of frost has passed.
Water deeply at the base of the plants and provide good air circulation. Avoid regularly wetting the foliage.
Pinching young plants encourages branching and increases the number of usable flowering stems.
Regular harvesting and deadheading also stimulate plants to continue producing new flowering shoots throughout the season.
Harvesting for Cut Flowers
Harvest when the flower is almost fully open and the stem has become firm.
Use the “wiggle test” to determine whether a flower is ready for cutting. Hold the stem approximately 20 cm below the bloom and gently shake it.
If the stem remains stiff and the flower head does not wobble excessively, the flower is ready to harvest.
If the stem bends or the flower head moves strongly from side to side, allow it to mature a little longer.
Cut deeply into the plant when harvesting to encourage the development of strong new flowering stems.
Vase life: approximately 7–10 days.
Remove foliage that would sit below the water line and place freshly harvested stems into clean water as soon as possible.
Zinnias are sensitive to very cold storage conditions and should not be stored at excessively low temperatures.
Long Summer Flowering
Once flowering begins, Benary's Giant Golden Yellow can continue producing flowers throughout summer and into early autumn.
Regular harvesting and deadheading prevent plants from directing energy into seed production and encourage continuous development of new flowering stems.
For the longest possible harvest season:
- Harvest flowers regularly
- Remove old or damaged blooms
- Water deeply during dry periods
- Maintain good air circulation
- Make succession sowings every 2–3 weeks
With good care, plants can continue flowering until the first autumn frost.
