How Long Does It Take to Flower?

Under favourable conditions, the first flowers can appear approximately 90 days after planting pre-sprouted corms.

In cooler conditions or during periods with limited natural light, flowering may take approximately 100–120 days.

Ranunculus is a cool-season flower. Bright, cool growing conditions generally encourage strong plants, longer stems and large, high-quality blooms.

Beginner's Guide – Preparing Ranunculus Corms

Dry ranunculus corms naturally look small, hard and shrivelled. This is completely normal. They are dormant and need to absorb water before active growth begins.

1. Soak the Corms

Place the corms in clean, cool or room-temperature water for approximately 3–4 hours.

Do not use hot water and do not soak overnight, as excessive soaking can increase the risk of rot.

After soaking, the corms should become noticeably plumper.

2. Pre-Sprout the Corms

Corms can be planted directly after soaking, but pre-sprouting is recommended for a more uniform start.

Fill a shallow tray with a light, well-drained growing medium. A mixture of potting compost with perlite, coco coir or vermiculite works well.

The substrate should be slightly moist, never wet.

Place the corms with their characteristic claw-like parts facing downwards and cover with approximately 2–3 cm of substrate.

3. Keep Cool

Keep the tray for approximately 10–14 days at 4–10°C in a cool, frost-free location.

Check every few days and keep the substrate only slightly moist.

Once small white roots and short shoots appear, the corms are ready for planting.

Planting

Plant the corms with their “claws” facing downwards.

Water lightly after planting.

Ranunculus does not tolerate waterlogged soil. If your soil is heavy or remains wet for long periods, raised beds or containers are a better choice.

Watering

Until active leaves appear, water carefully and sparingly. Newly planted corms require little moisture and can rot if the soil remains excessively wet.

Once active growth begins, keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.

As flower stems develop, water requirements increase. Consistent moisture supports the production of long, strong stems and large flowers.

Fertilising

Ranunculus benefits from fertile soil but does not require excessive feeding.

Before planting, enrich the soil with well-decomposed compost and a moderate amount of balanced fertiliser.

Once plants have developed several healthy leaves, usually around 3–4 weeks after planting, begin feeding moderately.

When flower buds appear, use a flowering fertiliser with moderate nitrogen and slightly higher potassium.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage lush foliage at the expense of flowers.

Growing in Containers

Elegance® ROSA CHIARO 85P B&B can also be successfully grown in large containers with excellent drainage.

Use a fertile, loose and free-draining growing medium and leave approximately 15 cm between corms.

Place containers in a bright, relatively cool position and never allow them to stand in water.

Growing in Colder Climates

Ranunculus can be successfully grown in:

Unheated greenhouses • Polytunnels • Raised beds with frost protection • Large containers • Protected garden beds

Ranunculus enjoys cool conditions, but severe or prolonged frost can damage young plants. Protect with horticultural fleece when necessary.

Harvesting for Cut Flowers

For the best vase life, harvest when the flower is fully coloured and beginning to open but is not yet completely expanded.

Gently test the bud between your fingers:

• Very firm: Too early
• Soft and marshmallow-like: Ideal stage for harvesting
• Fully open: Best for immediate use

Cut during the cooler morning hours and place stems immediately into clean water.

Remove foliage that would remain below the waterline. Regular harvesting encourages continued flower production.
