Echinacea purpurea PollyNation™ Orange Red | Coneflower Seeds

Echinacea purpurea PollyNation™ Orange Red is a striking perennial with large, intensely coloured orange-red flowers and a strong, well-branched habit. A FastraX perennial bred to flower from seed in the first year without vernalization, it is an excellent choice for sunny perennial borders, pollinator gardens, containers and premium pot production.

PollyNation™ Orange Red combines the classic beauty and resilience of Purple Coneflower with a vibrant, warm flower colour. The large daisy-like blooms feature rich orange-red petals surrounding a prominent central cone, creating a bold display from summer onwards.

Plants develop a naturally well-branched habit, reaching approximately 65 cm in height and 35 cm in width. Among the PollyNation™ colours, Orange Red is particularly vigorous, producing substantial plants with excellent garden presence.

Once established, Echinacea is remarkably tolerant of heat and periods of drought, making it an excellent perennial for sunny gardens and low-maintenance perennial plantings.

The flowers are also highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, bringing both colour and life to the summer garden.

First-Year Flowering Echinacea

PollyNation™ Orange Red belongs to the FastraX perennial group and has been selected specifically to flower in the first year from seed without vernalization.

This is a significant advantage compared with traditional seed-grown perennials that may require a cold period before flowering.

PollyNation™ is a facultative long-day plant. Longer days combined with high light levels encourage earlier flowering.

The spring crop time is approximately 20–24 weeks.

Sowing

When to Sow

For first-year flowering, start the seeds indoors in late winter to early spring.

Starting early provides the plants with sufficient time to develop and flower during their first growing season.

How to Sow

Sow 1 seed per plug. For larger plugs, up to 3 seeds may be used.

Unlike some fine perennial seeds, Echinacea PollyNation™ seeds do not require light for germination.

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of fine substrate or vermiculite.

Keep the substrate consistently moist during the initial germination period.

Germination

The first seedlings should emerge in approximately 5–10 days under optimal conditions.

  • Germination temperature: 22–24°C
  • First seedlings: Approx. 5–10 days
  • Light for germination: Not required
  • Cover: Thin layer of substrate or vermiculite
  • Recommended pH: 5.5–5.8
  • Initial EC: Approx. 0.7
  • Sowing: 1 seed per plug

Maintain high humidity during the initial germination stage. Once the seedlings have emerged, gradually reduce humidity and provide good ventilation.

After approximately 10 days, temperatures can be maintained at around 20–22°C.

Growing the Young Plants

Once the roots reach the bottom of the plug cells, temperatures can gradually be reduced to approximately 16–18°C.

Provide plenty of light to encourage sturdy, compact seedlings, but protect very young plants from intense direct sunlight.

Allow the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings. Echinacea prefers warm conditions and does not perform well in constantly saturated soil.

Persistent overwatering can contribute to root problems and uneven development.

Growing On

After transplanting, maintain approximately:

  • Day temperature: 16–18°C
  • Night temperature: 14–16°C
  • Humidity: 40–60%
  • Light: High light levels are beneficial

Lower night temperatures within the recommended range encourage basal branching and compact growth.

Avoid temperatures below approximately 12°C after transplanting, as excessively cool conditions can result in reddish foliage and uneven growth.

Protect young plants from frost.

Light & Flowering

PollyNation™ Orange Red responds positively to longer days and high light levels.

Long days combined with strong light encourage earlier flowering. For the home gardener, this means choosing the sunniest possible garden position.

A location receiving plenty of direct sunlight will support strong growth, abundant flowering and sturdy stems.

Planting in the Garden

Plant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the young plants are well established.

Choose a position in full sun with well-drained soil.

Although established Echinacea plants tolerate dry periods very well, newly planted specimens should be watered regularly while developing their root systems.

Avoid permanently wet or poorly drained soil.

Heat & Drought Tolerant

One of the major advantages of PollyNation™ Orange Red is its excellent performance in hot and relatively dry conditions.

Once established, plants tolerate periods of drought and are an excellent choice for sunny perennial borders and lower-maintenance garden designs.

Good drainage remains important, particularly during cooler and wetter periods.

A Garden for Pollinators

Echinacea is one of the classic plants for a pollinator-friendly garden.

The prominent central cones and accessible flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects throughout the flowering season.

Leaving some mature flower heads on the plants towards the end of the season can also add attractive winter structure to perennial borders.

Care

Water regularly while young plants establish, then reduce watering as the root system develops.

Remove faded flowers if you want to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued flower production.

Alternatively, leave some mature seed heads in place towards autumn for a more naturalistic appearance.

Pinching is not necessary for PollyNation™ Orange Red, as the plants naturally develop a well-branched habit.
