Pumpkin ‘Buen Gusto’ (Cucurbita maxima) is a beautiful ribbed pumpkin variety originating from Spain. It is both decorative and edible, making it perfect for autumn displays as well as for cooking.
The strongly ribbed fruits initially have an orange colour and can be enjoyed as decorative pumpkins. As the fruits mature, they gradually change to soft pink to salmon tones, which indicates full ripeness. At this stage the pumpkin develops its rich flavour and aromatic orange flesh, ideal for a wide range of recipes.
Plants have a vigorous trailing growth habit and produce large fruits with a diameter of around 30 cm, weighing approximately 5–10 kg. This variety is valued for both its ornamental appearance and excellent culinary quality.

Sowing
Pumpkins can be started indoors in pots or sown directly outdoors once the weather is warm enough.
If starting seeds in pots, avoid keeping seedlings in containers longer than necessary. Plants left too long in pots may stop developing properly and can take time to resume growth after transplanting outdoors. For this reason, do not start seeds too early — sowing indoors is usually best from March to April, but for outdoor transplanting it is often recommended not earlier than the end of April.
Pumpkin seeds germinate best at temperatures between 22–30 °C. During germination, the growing medium should be kept evenly moist but never wet, as excessive moisture can cause the seeds to rot.
Seeds can be directly sown outdoors from May to June, once the danger of frost has passed. If temperatures allow, direct sowing can begin from mid-May.
For reliable germination, the soil temperature at sowing depth should be at least 18 °C, while the ideal germination temperature remains 22–30 °C.
Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, but avoid overwatering.
Growing Information
Pumpkins grow best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Plants need plenty of space due to their vigorous trailing growth.
Regular watering and warm summer temperatures will encourage strong plant development and large fruits.
Harvest time typically runs from August to October.
