China Aster Hulk | Callistephus chinensis

Callistephus chinensis ‘Hulk’, commonly known as China Aster, is an extraordinary annual variety with unusual green architectural flowers that look completely different from traditional asters.

Instead of colourful outer petals, ‘Hulk’ develops a striking crown of green, leaf-like bracts surrounding a large yellow-green centre. The result is a sculptural, almost botanical-looking flower that adds beautiful texture and structure to bouquets.

Growing approximately 55–65 cm tall, ‘Hulk’ produces strong, upright stems and is particularly valuable as a cut flower for modern, natural and garden-style floristry.

Its unusual green colouring combines beautifully with white, cream, blush, apricot, burgundy, lavender and other soft garden colours.

An Extraordinary Green China Aster

‘Hulk’ is unlike a traditional China aster.

Its flowers are formed by green, petal-like bracts surrounding a prominent yellow-green centre, giving each bloom a fresh and architectural appearance.

This unusual form makes ‘Hulk’ particularly attractive for florists. It can be used almost like a combination of a flower and decorative greenery, adding texture between larger focal flowers.

It is especially beautiful in green-and-white arrangements, wedding floristry, contemporary bouquets and natural garden-style designs.

Excellent Cut Flower

‘Hulk’ was made for cutting. The plants produce strong, upright stems with unusual flowers that hold beautifully in floral arrangements.

The green colour is easy to combine with many different palettes, including:

White • Cream • Blush • Apricot • Burgundy • Lavender • Purple • Soft pastels

It is an excellent choice for professional flower growers as well as home cutting gardens.

When to Sow

For earlier flowering, sow indoors in spring and transplant outside after the danger of frost has passed.

Seeds can also be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed and conditions are suitable.

For a longer flowering and harvesting period, several sowings can be made at intervals.

Sowing & Germination

Sow onto a fine, moist and well-drained seed-starting substrate.

Press the seeds gently into the surface and cover only very lightly with fine vermiculite or substrate. Avoid burying the seeds deeply.

Germination temperature: Approx. 18–21°C
Germination time: Approx. 7–14 days

Keep the growing medium evenly moist during germination, but never waterlogged.

After germination, provide plenty of light to encourage strong and compact seedlings.

Growing the Seedlings

Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into individual cells or small pots.

Grow the young plants in a bright, well-ventilated location.

Temperatures of approximately 15–18°C are suitable after establishment.

Before planting outdoors, gradually harden the young plants to outdoor conditions.

Planting Outside

Plant outside after the danger of frost has passed.

Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil.

Recommended spacing is approximately:

20–30 cm between plants.

Closer spacing can encourage straighter stems for cutting, while wider spacing allows plants to develop a fuller shape.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly and moderately moist, especially while young plants are becoming established.

Avoid waterlogged conditions. China asters perform best with good drainage and good air circulation.

Where possible, water at the base of the plant rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage.

Feeding

China asters appreciate fertile soil and regular, moderate feeding.

Use a balanced fertilizer during active growth.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, as too much can encourage soft leafy growth instead of strong stems and high-quality flowers.

Growing ‘Hulk’ for Cut Flowers

For the best stems, grow ‘Hulk’ in a sunny position with fertile soil, consistent moisture and good air circulation.

In exposed locations or when growing intensively for cut flowers, support netting can help keep the stems straight.

Regular harvesting keeps the planting productive and provides a continuous supply of unusual green flowers.

When to Harvest

Harvest when the green flowers are fully formed and well developed.

Cut during the cooler part of the day and place the stems immediately into clean water.

Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.

A clean vase, fresh water and flower food will help maintain the quality of the cut stems.

Vase Life

‘Hulk’ is valued for its good vase life and firm, architectural flowers.

Its strong stems and unusual blooms make it especially useful in arrangements where both texture and durability are important.

Perfect for Modern Floristry

The unusual green flowers make ‘Hulk’ especially useful for:

Cut flower gardens • Wedding floristry • Garden-style bouquets • Contemporary arrangements • Green-and-white bouquets • Table arrangements • Botanical designs • Professional cut flower production

It is particularly beautiful when combined with softer flowers, where its sculptural shape creates contrast and adds texture.

Growing in the Garden

‘Hulk’ is not only a cut flower. Its unusual appearance also makes it an interesting addition to flower beds and borders.

Plant it among softer flowering varieties and ornamental grasses for a natural, contemporary look.

It can also be grown in larger containers.

Important – Crop Rotation

China asters can be susceptible to Fusarium wilt, a soil-borne disease.

For this reason, avoid growing China asters in the same location year after year.

Crop rotation, good drainage, healthy plants and avoiding excessive soil moisture can help reduce disease problems.
