Fragaria x ananassa Fresca | Strawberry Seeds
Fresca is an everbearing strawberry grown from seed, producing medium-sized, traditional strawberries over a long harvest season from early summer through autumn. Its compact, spreading growth makes it an excellent choice for home gardens, raised beds, containers and hanging baskets.
Unlike strawberries normally purchased as young plants or runners, Fresca can be grown completely from seed. The seeds are very small, but with an early indoor start they develop into productive strawberry plants suitable for both container and in-ground growing.
According to the breeder’s growing information, Fresca produces medium-sized berries from the beginning of summer through autumn, with approximately 85 days from transplanting to ripe fruit.
Plant Information
- Botanical Name: Fragaria x ananassa

Everbearing Strawberry
Fresca is valued for its long fruiting season rather than one short, concentrated harvest.
Plants can continue flowering and developing fruit through the growing season when conditions are suitable and ripe berries are harvested regularly. This makes Fresca particularly attractive for home gardeners who want fresh strawberries over an extended period.
Growing Fresca Strawberries from Seed
Strawberry seeds are tiny, so sow them carefully on the surface of a fine, moist seed-starting substrate. The breeder recommends 1–2 seeds per cell and only a light covering after sowing.
For the earliest possible crop, start the seeds indoors well before the outdoor planting season. An early sowing gives plants more time to become established and increases the possibility of harvesting fruit during the first growing season.
For professional plug production, the breeder gives a plug crop time of approximately 4–5 weeks. Initial temperatures are around 20–21°C, followed by gradually cooler conditions as the seedlings develop.
Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Strawberry seedlings are sensitive to high salt levels, particularly during germination, so avoid excessive fertilisation at this stage.
When Will Fresca Produce Strawberries?
The most useful figure for a home gardener is:
Approximately 85 days from transplanting to ripe fruit under suitable growing conditions.
This is different from counting the number of days from sowing the seed. The seeds first need to germinate and develop into transplantable young plants.
The breeder lists approximately 4–5 weeks for plug production, after which the plants continue developing toward flowering and fruiting. Actual timing will depend on sowing date, temperature, light and growing conditions.
So I would not use “150 days to maturity” as the main figure on the product page when the breeder’s own current GrowerFacts specifically states 85 days from transplant to ripe fruit. If you want to mention 150 days, it should be clearly described as an approximate seed-to-crop figure rather than transplant-to-fruit timing.
Planting and Growing
Transplant outdoors after the risk of severe frost has passed and the young plants have been gradually hardened off.
Choose a sunny location and fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 25–36 cm apart to allow the spreading growth to develop.
Keep plants evenly watered, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Avoid keeping the root zone constantly saturated.
Regular harvesting encourages plants to continue producing and also prevents overripe berries from remaining on the plant.
Perfect for Containers and Hanging Baskets
Fresca is particularly useful where garden space is limited. Its low, spreading habit works beautifully in:
- patio containers
- balcony pots
- hanging baskets
- raised beds
- traditional garden beds
The breeder specifically recommends Fresca for baskets, containers and in-ground cultivation.
In containers, use a fertile, well-drained growing medium and make sure plants receive plenty of sunlight. Container-grown strawberries may need more frequent watering than plants grown directly in the ground.
Why Grow Fresca Strawberry from Seed?
