Sow into a fine, evenly moist seed-starting substrate. Maintain consistent moisture during germination without keeping the substrate excessively wet.

Supplemental lighting is generally not required during plug production.

Transplant when seedlings have developed approximately 2–3 true leaves.

Growing for Long, Straight Stems

For professional cut flower production, relatively close spacing is important.

Recommended spacing: approximately 15 cm
Support: Horizontal netting is strongly recommended.

Support netting helps keep the stems upright. Without support, tall plants can fall over and develop curved stems, reducing their quality for cutting.

Avoid excessive spacing. Plants grown too far apart can develop very large heads that may be less suitable for professional cut flower production.

During the initial growth stage, warmer conditions of approximately 21–29°C encourage stem elongation.

Once plants have reached the desired size, temperatures below approximately 16°C encourage the characteristic rose colouring to develop.

Removing Lower Leaves

When plants reach approximately 25 cm in height, begin removing the lower leaves from the stem.

Repeat this process approximately 3–4 times as the plants grow taller. Gradual removal of the lower foliage creates the characteristic clean, elongated stems required for professional floral work.

Do not remove too much foliage at once while plants are still actively developing.

Fertilisation and Colour Development

During the vegetative growth stage, plants require adequate nutrition to develop strong, long stems.

As temperatures decrease and the central rosettes begin to colour, fertilisation should be reduced and eventually stopped. This allows the crop to finish naturally while developing its characteristic autumn colour.

From a typical July sowing, colour development may begin around late September to October, with harvest generally occurring during October–November, depending on climate and growing conditions.

Harvest when the stems have reached the desired length and the central rosettes have developed their characteristic rose-pink colour.
