Fritillaria uva-vulpis | Fox’s Grape Fritillary
Elegant spring-flowering bulb with nodding purplish-brown bells, golden-yellow petal tips and a beautifully natural woodland character.
Fritillaria uva-vulpis, commonly known as Fox’s Grape Fritillary, is a distinctive perennial bulb valued for its unusual bell-shaped flowers and refined, natural appearance.
Each slender stem typically carries one to two nodding flowers in rich purplish-brown tones with a subtle bluish sheen. The petals are finished with contrasting golden-yellow tips and edging, creating an intricate colour combination that becomes especially beautiful when viewed up close.
The plants grow approximately 20–30 cm tall, making them ideal for the front of borders, rock gardens, woodland-style plantings and containers.
Native to parts of Turkey, Iraq and Iran, Fritillaria uva-vulpis naturally grows in areas where the soil remains moist during the active growing season but drains well. Once established in suitable conditions, it can gradually naturalise and return year after year.

Distinctive Purplish-Brown & Golden Flowers
Fritillaria uva-vulpis has an unmistakable appearance.
The flowers hang gracefully from the top of slender stems and display a fascinating combination of dusky purple-brown, subtle bluish tones and golden-yellow edges.
Unlike brightly coloured spring bulbs, this fritillary has a more understated and sophisticated appearance, making it particularly attractive in naturalistic and woodland-inspired planting schemes.
The flowers look especially beautiful when planted among other early spring bulbs in soft, muted colours.
A Beautiful Naturalising Spring Bulb
Fritillaria uva-vulpis is well suited to gardens with a more natural style.
It can gradually establish and return each spring when planted in suitable conditions, making it an excellent choice for naturalising beneath deciduous shrubs, in lightly shaded borders or among perennial plants.
For the best effect, plant several bulbs together rather than individually.
Over time, established clumps can create an elegant spring display with very little intervention.
Excellent for Rock Gardens & Borders
Its relatively compact height of around 20–30 cm makes Fritillaria uva-vulpis particularly useful toward the front of borders.
It works beautifully in:
Rock gardens • Woodland gardens • Naturalistic borders • Spring beds • Gravel gardens • Containers • Under deciduous shrubs • Pollinator-friendly gardens
The dark flowers create an especially attractive contrast when combined with pale narcissus, white tulips, muscari or other delicate spring bulbs.
Pollinator Friendly
The spring flowers provide an early-season food source for visiting insects and pollinators.
This makes Fritillaria uva-vulpis a beautiful addition to gardens designed to provide flowering plants across a long season.
Planting several bulbs together creates a more visible and useful flowering patch during early spring.
Growing Conditions
Choose a position in full sun to partial shade.
Fritillaria uva-vulpis prefers soil that is moist during the growing season but well drained, as the bulbs should not remain in permanently waterlogged ground.
A humus-rich soil with good drainage is particularly suitable.
In heavier soils, adding grit or other drainage material around the planting area can help prevent excess winter moisture.
Planting
Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the soil freezes.
Plant approximately 5 cm deep with the pointed end facing upwards.
For a natural-looking display, position several bulbs together in small informal groups.
After planting, water the area to settle the soil around the bulbs.
Once established in the garden, the bulbs generally require little additional care.
Growing in Pots & Containers
Fritillaria uva-vulpis also grows very well in pots.
Choose a container with good drainage holes and use a free-draining potting mix.
Plant several bulbs together to create a fuller spring display.
Place the container in a sunny or partially shaded position and keep the compost moderately moist during active growth without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Its compact height makes this species particularly suitable for smaller spring container combinations.
After Flowering
After flowering, allow the foliage to remain on the plant until it has naturally yellowed and died back.
During this period, the leaves continue to provide energy to the bulb for the following season.
Avoid removing green foliage too early.
Once the foliage has completely dried, it can be removed.
When grown in suitable conditions, the bulbs can remain in the ground and flower again in future years.
