Zinnia elegans Oklahoma Golden Yellow | Cut Flower Zinnia Seeds
Zinnia ‘Oklahoma Golden Yellow’ is a beautiful cut flower variety with an abundance of warm golden-yellow, semi-double to double flowers.
Part of the professional Oklahoma series by Benary, it was specially bred for cut flower production. Plants develop strong, well-branched stems and continue producing new flowers after cutting, making this variety an excellent choice for cutting gardens, flower farms, bouquets and floristry.
The flowers are approximately 5 cm across – smaller and more delicate than giant Zinnias. This makes Oklahoma Golden Yellow especially useful in mixed bouquets, where its warm golden colour adds brightness without overpowering other flowers.

Beautiful Golden-Yellow Flowers
Oklahoma Golden Yellow produces warm, rich golden-yellow flowers that bring a beautiful sunny colour to summer bouquets.
The colour works especially well with:
White • Cream • Apricot • Peach • Salmon • Terracotta • Burgundy • Soft pink • Green
The relatively small flowers are easy to combine with larger focal flowers such as Dahlias, Lisianthus, Snapdragons and Sunflowers.
Excellent Cut Flower Variety
The Oklahoma series was developed specifically for cut flower growers.
Plants produce numerous flowers on strong, well-branched stems, making them suitable for regular harvesting throughout the summer.
Unlike large-flowered Zinnias, Oklahoma Golden Yellow has smaller flowers that are especially useful for mixed bouquets and detailed floral arrangements.
Regular cutting encourages the plant to branch and produce more flowering stems.
Cut & Come Again
The more Zinnias you cut, the more flowers the plants can produce.
After a flower stem is harvested, new side shoots develop and produce another flush of flowers.
For this reason, Oklahoma Golden Yellow is an excellent cut-and-come-again flower for anyone who wants to harvest fresh flowers throughout the summer.
Removing faded flowers also helps encourage continued flowering.
Growing from Seed
Oklahoma Golden Yellow is easy and fast to grow from seed.
- Sow 1 seed per cell or small pot
- Cover lightly with vermiculite or fine growing medium
- Light is not required for germination
- Germination temperature: 21–24°C
- Germination: approx. 3–5 days
- Keep the growing medium evenly moist, but not waterlogged
Zinnias grow quickly, so avoid keeping young plants in small cells for too long.
Transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed.
Direct Sowing
Seeds can also be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed and there is no longer a risk of frost.
Choose a warm position in full sun.
For a longer flowering and harvesting season, seeds can be sown in several batches during spring and early summer.
Light & Growing Conditions
Zinnias love sun and warmth.
For the strongest plants and best flowering, grow Oklahoma Golden Yellow in full sun.
Choose fertile, well-drained soil and provide regular watering during dry periods.
Avoid constantly wet soil.
Good spacing between plants improves air circulation and helps keep the foliage healthy.
Fertilization
Zinnias grow best in fertile soil but do not need excessive feeding.
A balanced flower fertilizer can be used once the plants are established and actively growing.
Avoid using too much nitrogen, as this can encourage excessive leafy growth instead of strong stems and abundant flowers.
Pinching for More Flowers
If growing Oklahoma Golden Yellow for cut flowers, pinching the young plants can encourage more branching and more flowering stems.
Once the plant is established and growing strongly, remove the central growing tip just above a pair of leaves.
The plant will then develop several side branches instead of one main stem, resulting in a fuller and more productive plant.
Harvesting for Cut Flowers
Cut the flowers when they are well developed and the stems feel firm and strong.
A simple way to check is the wiggle test:
Hold the stem approximately 20–25 cm below the flower and gently shake it.
If the stem stays firm and the flower head hardly moves, it is ready to cut.
If the flower head wobbles and the stem feels soft, leave it on the plant a little longer.
For the freshest flowers, harvest early in the morning or in the evening and place the stems immediately into clean water.
Perfect for Bouquets & Floristry
Oklahoma Golden Yellow is a particularly useful Zinnia for bouquets because its flowers are smaller than many traditional Zinnias.
The warm golden-yellow colour adds brightness and warmth, while the approximately 5 cm flowers fit naturally between larger flowers.
It is an excellent choice for:
Cutting gardens • Flower farms • Market bouquets • Wedding floristry • Bridal bouquets • Summer arrangements • Garden-style bouquets • Seasonal floristry
