Brassica oleracea Flare™ Rose F1 | Flowering Kale Seeds
Brassica oleracea Flare™ Rose F1 is a professional flowering kale bred specifically for cut flower production, combining early maturity, exceptional uniformity and long, straight stems with beautiful rose-pink centres. Its gently ruffled leaves form elegant decorative rosettes that resemble large flowers, bringing distinctive colour and texture to autumn bouquets and floral arrangements.
The Flare™ F1 series is particularly valued by professional growers because it is relatively easy to produce tall, uniform stems. Cool temperatures trigger the development of the characteristic colour, making Flare™ Rose an excellent late-season crop for autumn and early winter cut flower production.
Plant Details
Botanical name: Brassica oleracea
Common name: Flowering Kale / Ornamental Brassica
Variety: Flare™ Rose F1
Series: Flare™ F1
Family: Brassicaceae
Type: F1 Hybrid
Life cycle: Annual
Plant habit: Upright, single-stemmed
Plant height: 60–90 cm
Colour: Rose pink with green outer foliage
Use: Professional cut flower production
Days to harvest: approximately 90–110 days
Photoperiod: Day-length neutral
Beautiful Rose-Pink Colour
Flare™ Rose develops an elegant rose-pink centre surrounded by green foliage, creating the appearance of a large sculptural flower.
The leaves have gently ruffled, wavy edges, adding extra texture and volume to the finished rosette. This combination of soft colour and structured foliage makes Flare™ Rose particularly attractive for autumn bouquets, seasonal arrangements and floral design.
The characteristic colour does not develop immediately. Plants first need to establish strong vegetative growth and long stems. Cool temperatures later in the season stimulate the development of the intense central colour.
Flare™ F1 – Professional Cut Flower Series
Flare™ was developed with commercial cut flower growers in mind. The series combines:
Early maturity • Excellent uniformity • Tall stems • Single-stem production • Long-lasting cut stems • Attractive ruffled foliage • Reliable autumn colour
Plants can reach approximately 60–90 cm, producing tall stems topped by decorative rosettes.
Unlike compact ornamental kale intended for pots and landscape displays, Flare™ Rose is primarily designed to be grown as a cut flower.
Sowing
Recommended sowing: July–August; June in cooler regions
Germination temperature: 18–20°C
Germination: approximately 4–10 days
Plug tray: 200–288 cells
Plug production: approximately 3–4 weeks
Sow into a fine, evenly moist seed-starting substrate. Maintain consistent moisture during germination without keeping the substrate excessively wet.
Supplemental lighting is generally not required during plug production.
Transplant when seedlings have developed approximately 2–3 true leaves.
Growing for Long, Straight Stems
For professional cut flower production, relatively close spacing is important.
Recommended spacing: approximately 15 cm
Support: Horizontal netting is strongly recommended.
Support netting helps keep the stems upright. Without support, tall plants can fall over and develop curved stems, reducing their quality for cutting.
Avoid excessive spacing. Plants grown too far apart can develop very large heads that may be less suitable for professional cut flower production.
During the initial growth stage, warmer conditions of approximately 21–29°C encourage stem elongation.
Once plants have reached the desired size, temperatures below approximately 16°C encourage the characteristic rose colouring to develop.
Removing Lower Leaves
When plants reach approximately 25 cm in height, begin removing the lower leaves from the stem.
Repeat this process approximately 3–4 times as the plants grow taller. Gradual removal of the lower foliage creates the characteristic clean, elongated stems required for professional floral work.
Do not remove too much foliage at once while plants are still actively developing.
Fertilisation and Colour Development
During the vegetative growth stage, plants require adequate nutrition to develop strong, long stems.
As temperatures decrease and the central rosettes begin to colour, fertilisation should be reduced and eventually stopped. This allows the crop to finish naturally while developing its characteristic autumn colour.
From a typical July sowing, colour development may begin around late September to October, with harvest generally occurring during October–November, depending on climate and growing conditions.
Harvest
Days to harvest: approximately 90–110 days, depending on climate.
Harvest when the stems have reached the desired length and the central rosettes have developed their characteristic rose-pink colour.
Flare™ Rose produces long-lasting stems with excellent visual impact in:
- Autumn bouquets
- Large floral arrangements
- Seasonal installations
- Event floristry
- Mixed cut flower designs
The sculptural rosettes work particularly well as focal flowers, providing both colour and substantial texture.
Growing Notes
Flare™ Rose is a cool-season finishing crop. Warm conditions during early growth help produce long stems, while cool temperatures later in the season are essential for good colour development.
Watch plants for aphids, one of the principal pests affecting ornamental Brassica crops.
Correct spacing, support netting, gradual lower-leaf removal and cool finishing temperatures are key to producing straight, high-quality stems.
