Matthiola incana Katz Bright Rose | Stock

Matthiola incana Katz Bright Rose is a professional cut flower stock with vibrant bright rose-pink blooms, long strong stems and the characteristic sweet fragrance of stock. Its clear, lively pink colour is fresher and more vivid than muted antique or blush shades, making it an excellent choice for colourful spring and summer bouquets, romantic arrangements and professional floral design.

Katz Bright Rose belongs to the early-flowering, single-stem Katz series developed for cut flower production. Plants show good uniformity in both flowering time and stem length. Each plant produces one main flowering stem, typically reaching approximately 60–70 cm.

One of the important characteristics of the Katz series is that approximately 55–60% of plants naturally produce double flowers without seedling selection. Selection can be carried out by professional growers who want to increase the proportion of double-flowering plants.

Vibrant Bright Rose Colour

Katz Bright Rose stands out for its clear, saturated rose-pink flowers.

Unlike softer blush, dusty rose or Antique Rose shades, Bright Rose has a cleaner, brighter and more energetic pink colour. It provides a strong splash of colour while retaining the elegant appearance associated with stock flowers.

The vivid rose-pink shade works beautifully with white, cream, pale pink, lavender, apricot, burgundy and other pink tones. It is especially attractive in spring and early-summer bouquets, where its fresh colour brings brightness and warmth to floral arrangements.

Combined with the tall flower spikes and characteristic fragrance of Matthiola incana, Katz Bright Rose provides both visual impact and scent.

Professional Stock for Cut Flowers

Katz Bright Rose is particularly suitable for professional single-stem cut flower production.

The Katz series is valued for good uniformity in flowering time and stem length, making it easier to plan harvests and produce consistent stems for floristry.

Plants form upright flowering stems approximately 60–70 cm long, carrying dense columns of fragrant blooms.

Stock performs best as a cool-season cut flower, making Katz Bright Rose particularly suitable for spring and autumn production as well as protected cultivation.

One Plant – One Flowering Stem

Katz Bright Rose is a one-cut, single-stem stock. Each plant is grown to produce one main flowering stem.

Do not pinch the plants.

Pinching will not encourage the production of multiple harvestable stems as it does with branching cut flowers. Removing the growing point can terminate flowering.

For a longer harvest period, make successive sowings approximately every two weeks instead.

55–60% Double Flowers

Approximately 55–60% of Katz Bright Rose plants naturally produce double flowers without selection. The remaining plants produce single flowers.

Growers who want to increase the percentage of double-flowering plants can select seedlings.

At the cotyledon stage, expose seedlings to temperatures of approximately 4–7°C for 3–4 days.

After chilling, lighter green seedlings with more oval cotyledons are more likely to produce double flowers. Very small, darker green seedlings with rounder cotyledons are more likely to produce single flowers.

Selection is optional.

Sowing Katz Bright Rose Stock Seeds

Transplanting – Recommended

For cut flower production, starting the plants in plug trays is recommended.

Sow approximately 5–6 weeks before the planned transplanting date.

Sow seeds about 6 mm deep into a fine, well-drained seed-starting substrate. Professional growers can use 128-cell plug trays.

Maintain a temperature of approximately 18–24°C during germination.

Seeds normally germinate within 7–14 days.

Depending on temperature, season and growing conditions, allow approximately 90–100 days from sowing to flowering.

Direct Sowing

Seeds may also be sown directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. For more uniform professional cut flower production, transplanting is generally preferred.

Stock performs particularly well under cool growing conditions. Spring and autumn successions are therefore recommended.

For an extended flowering and harvest period, sow a new succession approximately every two weeks.

Growing Conditions

Grow Katz Bright Rose in full sun in moderately rich, well-drained soil.

Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, but avoid overwatering and waterlogged conditions.

Because Matthiola incana belongs to the Brassicaceae family, young plants may be susceptible to flea beetle damage. Where flea beetles are a problem, row cover can be used to protect young plants.

Long stems may benefit from a horizontal support net, particularly in areas with frequent rain or where plants are exposed to wind.

Harvesting for Cut Flowers

Harvest Katz Bright Rose when approximately ⅓–½ of the florets on the stem are open.

At this stage, the flower spike already displays plenty of colour while the remaining buds can continue opening in the vase.

Expected vase life is approximately 5–10 days.

For short-term cold storage, maintain approximately 2–5°C.
