Cosmos bipinnatus Antiquity | Early Flowering Compact Cosmos | Cosmos Seeds

Cosmos bipinnatus Antiquity is a truly distinctive, early-flowering cosmos with an exceptional colour transformation: the flowers open in rich burgundy-red and gradually mature to antique bronze-salmon tones. As flowers of different ages appear together on the same plant, Antiquity creates a beautiful multi-tonal display of burgundy, dusty rose, bronze and salmon shades.

Unlike many tall traditional cosmos varieties, Antiquity has a more compact, upright habit, reaching approximately 51–76 cm. It is very early to flower and highly floriferous, providing abundant colour throughout summer and into autumn.

Its unusual colouring and manageable size make Antiquity an excellent choice for pots, containers, borders and garden beds.

A Unique Colour Transformation

The outstanding feature of Cosmos Antiquity is its remarkable changing flower colour.

Fresh flowers open in a deep, rich burgundy shade. As the blooms mature, their colour gradually softens and develops into beautiful antique bronze-salmon tones.

Because new and mature flowers are present simultaneously, a single plant can display several shades at once. The result is a sophisticated vintage colour palette that looks quite different from the traditional white, pink and crimson colours associated with Cosmos bipinnatus.

Antiquity is particularly beautiful combined with cream, apricot, blush pink, dusty rose, burgundy and warm bronze tones.

Early and Floriferous

Antiquity is valued not only for its unusual colour but also for its very early and abundant flowering.

Under suitable growing conditions:

Plug crop time: 4–5 weeks
Transplant to flowering: approximately 6–7 weeks

Once flowering begins, plants continue producing numerous blooms throughout the summer and can continue into autumn depending on local growing conditions.

Regular removal of faded flowers helps maintain an attractive appearance and encourages continued flowering.

Compact Cosmos for Pots and Gardens

With a height of approximately 51–76 cm, Antiquity is considerably easier to incorporate into containers and smaller garden spaces than many tall cosmos varieties.

It is particularly well suited to:

  • Pots and decorative containers
  • Patios and balconies
  • Flower beds and borders
  • Smaller gardens
  • Mixed summer plantings
  • Mass plantings

For commercial pot production, Antiquity is also suitable for approximately 9–10 cm pots.

Sowing and Growing

Seeds can be started indoors for earlier flowering or direct sown outdoors once the danger of frost has passed.

Sow into a fine, well-drained seed-starting substrate and maintain even moisture during germination. After emergence, provide plenty of light to encourage strong, compact growth.

Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing plants approximately 30–36 cm apart.

Choose a position in full sun with well-drained soil. Avoid excessive fertilisation, particularly high levels of nitrogen, which can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Water moderately and avoid permanently wet soil.
